Spray Foam Insulation Options
Professionally applied spray polyurethane foam, or SPF, involves two chemical compounds that are blended together in a special spray gun and applied to a surface, expanding 20-30 times to envelope any shape or size of structure.
You have two basic options to choose from when it comes to spray polyurethane foam insulation:
1) Closed Cell
Closed cell foam is the more expensive option, and for good reason. It provides some of the best insulation in the market, with an R-value of 6-7.1 per inch. It is also an effective moisture and vapor barrier, and cures to a hard, impermeable surface.
2) Open Cell
Open cell spray foam is less expensive and less dense than closed cell, with an R-value that ranges from about 3.5 to 4. The numerous air bubbles that take up the bulk of open cell foam’s volume hold air, which provide insulation value.
Because open cell foam is largely air, it is not hard, like closed cell foam. It is spongier and more permeable – it will absorb moisture. For this reason, it is not recommended for areas that will experience moisture, such as basements and crawl spaces.
